BAADHI ya watu hawapendi kutumia maharage kama mboga kutokana na kuonekana kama ni mboga ya kimasikini, lakini kiafya maharage ni miongoni mwa mboga zenye faida kubwa mwilini na hutoa ahueni kubwa kwa watu wenye matatizo mbalimbali ya kiafya kama tutakavyoona leo katika makala haya;
Kwa mujibu wa utafiti mbalimbali, maharage, hasa yale meusi, ni chanzo kizuri cha kirutubisho aina ya ‘faiba’ kinachoshusha kiwango cha kolestro mwilini. Vile vile kiwango cha ‘faiba’ kilichomo kwenye maharage meusi, huweza kudhibiti kiwango cha sukari kisipande haraka baada ya chakula, hivyo kufanya maharage kuwa lishe nzuri kwa wagonjwa wa kisukari na shinikizo la juu la damu.
Iwapo utapata mchanganyiko wa maharage meusi na ule mchele ‘mweusi’ ambao haujakobolewa na kuondolewa virutubisho vyake muhimu (brown rice), basi utaweza kupata kiasi kikubwa cha protini na faiba ambacho huwezi kupata kutoka katika chakula kingine.
Aidha, utafiti wa muda mrefu uliofanywa na jarida moja lijulikanalo kama ‘Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry’, unaonesha kuwa mbali ya maharage kuwa na kiwango kikubwa cha ‘faiba’, pia maharage yana virubisho vingine vinavyojulikana kama ‘anthocyanins’ ambavyo hutoa kinga mwilini (antioxidant). Kiwango cha virutubisho hivyo kilichomo kwemye maharage, kinaelezwa kuwa ni kikubwa kuliko hata kinachopatikana kwenye matunda kama zabibu ambayo inaaminika kuwa na kiwango kikubwa zaidi.
Inaelezwa pia kuwa, watafiti walipofanya tathmini ya ziada kwenye maharage, waliweza kubaini kuwa maharage yanapokuwa meusi zaidi, ndivyo ambavyo kiwango kikubwa cha kinga kinavyoweza kupatikana, yakifuatiwa na maharage ya rangi nyekundu, kahawia, njano na mwisho meupe. Hii ina maana kwamba maharage meusi ndiyo yana virutubisho vingi zaidi kuliko maharage meupe na rangi nyingine.
Kwa ujumla, kiwango cha kinga (antioxidant) kilichomo kwenye maharage meusi ni mara kumi ya kile kinachopatikana kwenye matunda kama machungwa, zabibu na mengine. Hivyo unapokula maharage, siyo tu unapata ‘faiba’ ya kutosha bali pia unapata virutubisho muhimu mwilini kwa ajili ya kutengeneza kinga ya mwili dhidi ya vinyelezi vya maradhi.
Yafuatayo ni baadhi ya matatizo ya kiafya yanayoweza kudhibitiwa kwa kiasi kikubwa na ulaji wa maharage meusi kama ilivyothibitika katika tafiti mbalimbali za kisayansi;
MAHARAGE YANA KINGA DHIDI YA SARATANI Utafiti umefanyika na kuthibitisha kuwa maharage meusi yana uwezo wa kutoa kinga mwilini dhidi ya saratani za aina mbalimbali.
MAHARAGE KINGA DHIDI YA UGONJWA WA MOYO Utafiti ulionesha pia watu wanaokula chakula chenye kiwango kingi cha ‘faiba’ kama vile maharage, hawako hatarini kupatwa na magonjwa ya moyo, ikiwemo kiharusi.
MAHARAGE HUONGEZA NGUVU MWILINI Ulaji wa maharage meusi husaidia kurejesha madini chuma mwilini na hivyo kuupatia mwili wako nguvu.
MAHARAGE YANA PROTINI NYINGI Maharage yana kiwango cha juu cha protini bora mwilini, hivyo badala ya nyama nyekundu, ambayo ikizidi ina madhara mwilini, kula maharage meusi.
Hizo ndiyo faida za maharage mwilini ambazo kila mtu anapaswa kuzijua kwa faida ya afya yake ya sasa na ya baadae.

Katika toleo lake la hivi karibuni, jarida linalojishughulisha na uandishi wa habari mbalimbali za masuala ya lishe, Eating Well Magazine, limetoa matokeo ya utafiti mbalimbali wa vyakula vinavyochelewesha kasi ya mtu kuzeeka haraka, (anti aging foods) kama ifuatavyo:
CHOKOLETI Katika kisiwa kimoja cha San Blas kilichopo Panama Marekani ya Kusini, kuna jamii moja ya watu wa Kuna ambao hawana matatizo ya magonjwa ya moyo ukilinganisha na wenzao wa Panama upande wa bara ambao wanasumbuliwa na maradhi ya moyo mara tisa zaidi ya wenzao!
Sababu ya jamii moja kuwa salama kiasi hicho ni kutokana na kupenda sana kunywa kwa wingi vinywaji vitokanavyo na zao la kakao (cocoa) ambalo lina kiwango kikubwa cha kirutubisho aina ‘flavanols’ ambacho kina uwezo wa kuimarisha utendaji kazi wa mishipa ya damu (blood vessels). Inaelezwa kuwa uimarishaji wa mishipa ya damu, hupunguza hatari ya mtu kupatwa na ugonjwa wa kisukari, magonjwa ya figo na magonjwa ya akili.
SAMAKI Miaka 30 iliyopita, watafiti wa masuala ya lishe na magonjwa, walianza kufanya utafiti wa kujua kwa nini jamii ya watu wa Inuits waliyoko Alaska walikuwa hawasumbuliwi na ugonjwa wa moyo kabisa. Katika utafiti wao, walikuja kugundua kuwa jamii hiyo inakula idadi kubwa sana ya samaki ambao wana kirutubisho cha ‘Omega-3’ kinachozuia kujijenga kwa kolestro mwilini na kuimarisha mapigo ya moyo kuwa sawa.
KARANGAUtafiti uliowahi kufanywa na madhehebu ya Wasabato, ambao husisitiza ulaji unaozingatia afya na lishe ya mboga za majani (vegetarian), unasema kuwa mtu anapokula karanga, huongeza wastani wa miaka miwili na nusu katika umri wake wa kuishi. Karanga ni chanzo kikubwa cha mafuta asili, hivyo hutoa faida sawa na zile zinopatikana kwenye Olive Oil. Pia karanga ina kiwango kikubwa cha vitamini, madini na virutubisho vingine, vikiwemo vya kukinga mwili.
MVINYO (WINE) Utafiti unaonesha kuwa unywaji wa kilevi kwa kiwango cha kawaida, hutoa kinga dhidi ya magonjwa ya moyo, kisukari na upotevu wa kumbukumbu kichwani kutokana na umri mkubwa. Kwa mujibu wa utafiti huo, aina mbalimbali za vileo (alcohol) zinaonesha kuwa na faida hizo, lakini mkazo wa utafiti umeelekezwa zaidi kwenye mvinyo mwekundu. Inaelezwa kuwa mvinyo mwekundu una kirutubisho kiitwacho ’resveratrol’ ambacho, kwa mujibu wa utafiti, huzuia kuzeeka kwa chembechembe za mwili.
MTINDI Mwaka 1970, Georgia ya Urusi, ilidaiwa kuwa na idadi kubwa ya wazee wenye umri wa miaka 100 kuliko nchini nyingine duniani. Taarifa za wakati huo, zilidai kuwa siri ya watu wengi kuwa na umri mkubwa kama huo ni mtindi, ambao huliwa katika mlo wao wa kila siku. Wakati uwezo wa mtindi kurefusha maisha ya mtu haujathibitishwa kisayansi, lakini inaeleweka kuwa mtinmdi una kiasi kikubwa cha madini ya kashiamu na aina fulani ya ‘bacteria’ ambao hutoa kinga kwenye utumbo mdogo dhidi ya maradhi mbalimbali ya tumbo.

Mengi adai waziri ataka kumuhujumu..
Hivi karibuni waziri mmoja kijana anayeongoza wizara nyeti alipendekeza nibambikiziwe kodi bandia ya kiasi kikubwa nitakachoshindwa kulipa na hatimaye nifilisiwe kama njia pekee ya kuninyamazisha kabisa eti kama alivyofilisiwa tajiri mmoja mkubwa huko Urusi.
Alidai kwamba vyombo vyangu vya habari vimekuwa mno mstari wa mbele kupiga vita ufisadi, jambo ambalo kwa maoni yake siyo zuri kwa sababu linawanyanyasa baadhi ya watu.
Nilitegemea waziri huyo msomi sana angefahamu jinsi vyombo vya habari vinavyofanya kazi. Angalao angefahamu kwamba anayeamua nini kiandikwe na nini kisiandikwe ni mhariri wa gazeti ambaye taaluma yake ni uandishi wa habari na siyo mmiliki wa vyombo vya habari.Kama mkiristo na kama alivyoagiza Bwana Yesu namsamehe kwa vile hajui atendalo.
Baada ya kumsamehe ningetaka ajue yafuatayo.Asiyekemea maovu katika jamii, yeye ni sehemu ya maovu hayo. Waziri huyu na wale wote ambao wamekwishanitumia vitisho wakumbuke kwamba hata kama watafanikiwa kuvinyamazisha kwa hujuma zozote zile, vyombo vyangu vya habari, na hata kama mimi sitakuwepo tena, moto wa kupiga vita ufisadi uliokwishawashwa katika akili za wanajamii hauwezi kuzimika kamwe.
Ieleweke pia kwamba sauti za maskini na wanyonge katika jamii hazisikiki kwa urahisi. Vyombo vya habari husaidia kupaaza sauti na vilio vyao katika vita dhidi ya maovu. Ni wajibu wa kila mtu aliye na uwezo kusema kwa sauti kubwa kwa niaba ya wanyonge na maskini ili kutokomeza ufisadi.
Nachukua fursa hii kumpongeza sana Rais wetu Mhe. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete kwa kuguswa na sauti na vilio vya wanyonge na maskini wa Tanzania kuhusu ufisadi na hatua za kijasiri zinazochukuliwa na Serikali yake dhidi ya ufisadi.
Sisi sote ni lazima tuzidi kumwomba Mwenyezi Mungu azidi kumpa ujasiri, nguvu na hekima nyingi wakati huu wa majaribio makubwa.

As they were preparing for their punishment, the sheikh said, "It's my first wife's birthday today and she asked me to allow each of you one wish before your whipping, but you cannot wish not to be whipped!"
Mutambara thought for a second then said: "Please tie a pillow to my back before whipping." This was done but the pillow lasted 10 lashes.
Mugabe saw this and said: "Please tie two pillows to my back before whipping." This was done and lasted for the whole 20 lashes.
Tsvangirayi saw this, but before he could make his wish, the sheikh said: "As you are from the most popular party of Zimbabwe with all the wealth and you share the same ethnicity with Barack Obama, you are permitted to have two wishes!"
Tsvangirayi thought for a second, then said:"Thank you, most royal and merciful highness. My first wish is to receive 100 lashes with the strongest, toughest whip available."
"If you so desire," the sheikh replied with a questioning look on his face, "and your second wish?"
Tsvangirayi replied
"Tie Mugabe to my back."

There are few steps that you can take to protect yourself and your family from what seems to be the inevitable flu. The guardian of the health of our body is the immune system. While intangible and challenging to identify, the immune system has very specific signs and symptoms.
I’d like you to consider some new approaches and angles that will provide you with insight into the likelihood that you will stay healthy or get sick this winter season.
1. Sugar and processed foods impact the immune system.
Studies have shown that through a complex system of chemical processes sugar and processed foods depress the immune system. There exists a direct link between the amount of these foods that your child consumes and his/her health.
Obvious foods such as sodas, candy, cookies, ice cream, and potato chips are the big guns that should be kept concealed.
Even more disturbing are the foods that you think are healthy for your child that hide sugar and many refined ingredients: yogurt, and yogurt drinks and “pops;”most cereals; juices; fruit roll ups and “leathers;” “healthy” cookies and treats, soy ice cream and frozen treats. While being marketed as healthy choices, these foods aren’t much better than the obvious poor choices. Work hard during flu season to keep these foods away from your children. Read ingredient labels and watch out for: corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup or “HFCS,” brown rice syrup, fructose, sucrose, barleymalt and the obvious, sugar.
2. Fresh foods offer the highest quality vitamins.
It’s shocking to me how often I see people turn to orange juice for vitamin C in an effort to fight off a cold or flu.
It is important to understand that the majority of vitamin C in orange juice is added after processing. Vitamin C and others like zinc, vitamin E, and magnesium help to support the immune system and are a great defense during flu season.
Choose better by having kids eat fresh whole foods such as cherries, berries, and apples, and vegetables such as spinach, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots and sweet potatoes.
I know you probably hear this suggestion all the time, but it can’t be stressed enough. It is imperative to find creative ways to prepare vegetables so that kids will actually eat them. Sautee, roast or grill vegetables with olive oil or real butter, add some fresh sea salt or sprinkle with organic low fat cheese and kids will be more likely to eat.
3. Sleep will boost the immune system.
At night while we rest, the body is working to rebuild the immune system. Deep sleep allows a complex set of hormonal changes that recharge the body so that it’s resilient the next day. Be diligent and ensure that kids get a full night sleep of 8-10 hours.
Mandate bedtime despite protests and stick to a regular schedule. These are the times that mom and dad really need to be the boss. Resist the temptation to allow your child to stay up late and watch his or her favorite show. At the end of the day when you are tired as well, it’s easy to give in to your child’s vigilant campaign.
Remember: Would you rather avoid the confrontation tonight? Or deal with a sick kid tomorrow?
4. Fatigue is the first sign of a distressed immune system.
As already stated, the immune system desperately needs sleep to keep the body healthy. When the immune system is fighting to keep your child healthy, it requests that the body get extra rest to help in the fight.
If your child seems more fatigued than usual, it could be a very strong signal that your child is on the brink of getting sick.
The best way to fight off a cold or flu is to act immediately and get extra rest. Pay attention to the health of others around you such as those at work or your child’s school. If you hear of a bug “going around” and you notice that your child is tired, there’s a good chance that extra sleep will ward off the cold or flu. This is the time to allow extra television and require a mid-day nap.
5. Wash hands frequently, but avoid antibacterial products.
This seems counterintuitive, but the best way to kill environmental germs is to use soap and hot water and scrub hands thoroughly. Bacteria live all around us. They are on every surface we touch and in every breath we take. Without bacteria, our immune system wouldn’t learn to be strong.
Our internal bacterial system fights off invaders and thereby gets more effective at winning the battle. It’s just like working out: In order to become stronger, you must work hard in the gym. Your child’s body is a bacterial gym. Again, this comes back to the immune system. If you foster a strong immune system, your child’s body will fight off invaders and therefore become more resilient to future battles. While it is imperative to wash hands frequently during flu season, remember that the hands are only one very small way that germs enter your child’s system. Killing off the germs on hands with antibacterial products is futile and weakens your child’s- and the world’s- future ability to confront germs.
